The 1st Degree

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Hi everyone, i just wanted to tell you about something really exciting that i have only just found out about this week, and kind of ‘blow my own trumpet’ a little bit, because if i won’t who will you know. Anyway yes the exciting news, i got some awesome feedback from my college lecturer the other day that there is a really good chance that i will be able to achieve the highest grade available for my BSC Dissertation, The highly coveted 1st grade which should really boost my weighted average for my year because i am currently hovering between a 2.1 and a 2.2, so along with my dissertation i am really going to have to push myself in my final two modules to try and get either 2.1 or a 1st for the whole year so that my chances of getting a decent career in the work would be raised as well as being able to progress to a Masters Degree next year, of which i am really looking forward to, i know it will be hard but i believe it will most certainly be beneficial to my future in IT.

I would also like to tell you a little bit about my dissertation if i may, i know some of you may think it boring or be thinking to your selves, what on earth is he on about, but i will try and make it simple-ish which is not easy because it is not a simple subject but you will be glad to know that i will not be going into a great amount of detail, just the basics of what it is all about.

So my dissertation is all about the insecurities of WiFi encryption more precisely how easy the different methods of security are to break into, i have covered WEP, WPA and WPA2, and i am sure if you are reading this with some degree of knowledge of wireless you will know that WPA2 is virtually impossible to ‘Crack’ into however my research has shown the other two are much easier, and i would like to alert those who have lesser knowledge that if you are running WEP encryption on a wireless device the your systems are what we call in the technical world an ‘Open door’ to anyone with a bit of know how, the right software and a few minutes, and WPA if used improperly produces much the same result between 15 and 30 minutes, so my advice to you is to use the most random password you can think of for WPA or switch to WPA2 and never worry about being breached in the near future. I apologies if all of that flew over your head, this subject is not exactly something you can tech in one paragraph but hopefully my 10,000 word dissertation will impress that examination board a Leeds Met enough to get me that first grade.

Anyway that the most exciting news i have had in the last 6 days, and i will certainly let you know what i get when i recieve my result :D . thanks for reading if you managed to get this far without getting a head ache. Bye :)

Music Madness

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Hi everyone, just thought i would keep you all up to date with my new and riveting music career lol. So far I am getting better at my chords and even branching out a little bit with some of the harder bar chords, I don’t quite have them right yet, i think i need to build some strength in my little finger for the high ‘E’ string cost it tends to ‘twang’ a lot when i play but its something i am working on :D .

I had a good proper go last night with Oasis’ wonderwall chords, it wasn’t great but i think i have the rythm of play about right (down, down,up,up,down) for the strumming, and then attempted Man in the moon by REM but made a right pigs ear of it, more practice is needed I think, I guess it will just take a bit of time to get used to the different rythms and quick finger changes, I’m still fluffing some of them because I get a bit confused when my teach plays his guitar with me, it kind of puts me off cos I am paying more attention to what he is playing than what I am playing, so it is a bit difficult in that respect, but the main thing is i am getting better one step at a time and i am enjoying it.

I have also started to listen to some proper acoustic’y music to get me thinking about the different rythms that different artists use, I have dicoverd a great band called the fleet foxes that are kind of an american folky ish band that also do harmonising like a barbershop band but they are quite good, their music is quite complex the way it is composed but they definatly have a unique sound behind them that seems to get my foot tapping, I would definatley recommend giving them a listen even if your not in to that kind of music as you never know you might like them.

I think thats me up to date with everything in this area so far, but watch this space for more updates on my progress, and I am sure I will be adding more posts about other things as well, I hope you enjoy reading them all. Bye :)

Guitar Greatness

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Hi guys, I’m introducing a new category of music as i though it might be fun to keep you up to date with my new musical hobby. I have just started to properly learn classical guitar after a few months of actually owning a guitar, i originally bought it with the hope of doing an adult education course at my local high school, but that went to pot when they could not find a teach for the course on the night that i wanted and that was in October, but now i have the suport of two great people from my church band, it’s bass and guitar player, and so far i am having great fun.

It’s been a couple of weeks now and i’m getting pretty good at my chords and a little bit of Tab playing, and i have just been practicing what i know and putting chords together to make some pretty cool sounds and i can play one or two proper songs and hopefully more soon, and after a couple of months of practice i should hopefully be good enough to play with the church band on occasion when im not being sound man or projectionist :D

Thats it for now, i will try and keep you up to date with my progress as often as i can (be bothered to :P ). Bye for now.
